Could you tell us how you got into your healthy lifestyle, and what makes you stick with it?
My father’s health issues were my initial inspiration that took me from wanting to get healthy and compete to doing it. He has suffered a stroke, a quadruple bypass, a kidney transplant, a heart attack and he has a rare disease. Watching my father go through all of these issues made me want to do anything I could to avoid being in the same situation. When I started my fitness career, I was out of shape and unhealthy. I wasn’t eating right, and I wasn’t exercising. Being motivated for my health versus just getting in shape continues to push me even now over ten years later.
Do you have days where you don’t want to eat right? If so, what thoughts do you think and what actions do you take in order to overcome those hurdles?
I have a rule, I will not eat unhealthy meals consecutively. If I’m really craving something, I enjoy it. I’ve learned to cook everything I love in a healthy way, but sometimes I want chips and salsa, from my favorite restaurant, and nothing else will do. It’s not about falling down. It’s about how fast you can get back up. I’ve learned one indulgent meal doesn’t mean I should throw away a whole weekend. My health is my main motivation. I want to be healthy not just look healthy and feel terrible on the inside. Let’s face it great food should be enjoyed, it’s all about balance and not living in extremes.
What do you think are 3 main keys to staying motivated and positive?
1. Clearly define your why.
2. Be grateful in the little things.
3. *Know your worth-independent of your appearance.
I know you are a busy mom, wife, successful business woman and more, what would you say to the mothers out there that are looking for balance and looking to change their lives for the better?
Don’t be so hard on yourself. I always say, “I’m under construction,” because I’m constantly trying to evolve into a better me. I believe in organization, living intentionally and carving out time for my passions. Haven’t you noticed how much more productive you are when you’re busy working toward a goal? My main tip is find a way to organize yourself and have a daily top three. Get these done every day. Moms get so inundated with busy work that they feel overwhelmed and frustrated. Be proud of all you do in a day ladies, you are amazing!
What is something we should know about you and your brands?
I want to use my life to help other people. I’ve learned the greatest reward is not a magazine cover, a title or things, it’s in sharing what you’ve gone through to help people. Through writing, speaking and social media, I aim to educate and share anything I can to help people feel good about themselves, get healthy and be their personal best.
What is your favorite, fast, easy recipe that you always keep handy?
I always have fresh ground chicken breasts on hand, so I throw that on some spinach leaves with raspberry balsamic vinegar. In less than ten minutes, dinner is made. I will add any veggies I have in the fridge to it and sometimes even fruit.
Do you always feel as confident as you look? How do you control your thoughts in order to continue to accomplish your dreams and continue growing as a person?
My worth as a person has nothing to do with what I look like. As long as you combine how you look with who you are, you’re going to ride a roller coaster of self-esteem issues. My confidence comes from God, my family and the fact that I know my worth and purpose.
What do you do if you miss your workout, you are really crunched for time and your day completely falls apart? What are some tips on planning a successful day?
I can honestly say that rarely happens. My training is a set appointment, and I rely on it for energy, structure to my day and my happiness. I don’t drink coffee, so I always say, my morning workout is my coffee. If for some reason I’m unable to workout, I’ll add activity to my day. It’s easy to do a HIIT workout in 20 minutes in my yard. I don’t really spend time asking myself whether or not I want to workout, I just do it. Here are some tips: get organized, find your preferred method. Make your workouts an appointment. Buy Tosca Reno’s Cookbooks for family and kids. Getting your family on board with healthy eating is the best feeling and holds everyone accountable. Most importantly, make time for you and learn to say no. Don’t over budget your time, leave margin so you don’t feel frazzled. It’s okay to not be able to do it all. If you only have a free hour, don’t fill it up with more. Moms, in particular, feel way too much pressure to always take on everything.
I think self love is so incredibly important, and as females we should be proud of who we are and celebrate our accomplishments. What is something you absolutely love about your character?
My work-ethic. I’m a fighter. If I want something, I will put the work in. I’ve never expected something to be handed to me. Growing up without very much taught me early, if you want something, YOU have to make it happen. You must earn it. I also freely give any time I have to help people trying to adopt fitness as a lifestyle. I know what it feels like to be overweight and out of shape, how it feels to be a new mom and wonder if I’ll ever get my body back and how it feels to want to be a fitness competitor and not know where to begin.
You are such a role model to me and you just seem to get better and better. Do you believe the best is yet to come and what is your secret to staying so young?
Thank you so much. I do believe the best is yet to come. Life is always moving forward and changing, but I really try to live in the now. I feel younger now than ever, and it’s because I have a wonderful marriage, a beautiful healthy child and as a family we enjoy taking care of our health together.
Any fun beauty tips you swear by or is that just the glow of being happy and healthy?
Good skin, healthy living, bright eyes, and white teeth are hard to fake. All the makeup in the world can’t change bad skin. I swear by Retin-A. Never go to bed with your makeup on and wear a hat outside with sunglasses, because sunscreen is not enough. I have not put my face in the sun in over 20 years. Establish a regular skin regimen and stick to it. Nothing makes your skin glow like an intense workout and a clean diet. Whiten your teeth. When you have great skin and you’re happy and healthy from the inside out, you radiate health and beauty-hence that glow!
Lori, I’m overwhelmed by your words. You inspire me, and I find you an absolutely well-rounded stunning beauty. Thank you for this incredible opportunity. If any of your readers would like to contact me, I’d love to hear from them.
